There’s no doubt that travel can be fun, adventurous, enjoyable, and exciting. This is the reason why travel campaigns are so attractive to many Japanese people on social media. Below are 3 effective Japanese travel campaigns that increased online engagement.

  1. Japan Airline and Tokyo Camera Club — photo contest

Japan Airlines and Tokyo Camera Club created a photo contest on Instagram where winners received air tickets and merchandise. The contest had 4 categories each with its own hashtags:

  • #xmasjalred
  • #JAL東京カメラ部2017旅 (JAL Tokyo Camera Club 2017 travel)
  • #JAL東京カメラ部2017飛行機 (JAL Tokyo Camera Club 2017 airplane)
  • #JAL東京カメラ部2017JAPAN (JAL Tokyo Camera Club 2017 JAPAN)

Starting with the Christmas category, the campaign lasted for nearly 2 months and had over 30,000 posts with the hashtag, #JAL東京カメラ部2017旅 alone.

2. Relux — memorable travel campaign

The online hotel booking site, Relux, released an Instagram hashtag campaign with #reluxリッツカールトンの夏 (Relux Ritz Carlton summer) for the summer season. Instagram users entered this campaign by posting their favorite summer travel photos with the campaign hashtag for a chance to win free stays at Ritz Carlton Okinawa. There are 1,357 posts on Instagram already with this specific hashtag filling the feed with beautiful summery photos.

3.Jalan — Nogizaga 46 collaboration campaign

Jalan, one of Japan’s largest travel booking site, collaborated with a popular Japanese girl-group, Nogizaka 46, for a campaign. To enter this campaign, Twitter users had to follow Jalan’s account and RT their campaign post. This collaboration allowed Jalan to attract customers who are familiar with the girl-band but have not used their online booking services before by offering Nogizaka 46 collaborated merchandise.

Social media marketing cannot be ignored in the Japanese travel industry especially since most travel bookings can now be done online. Travel photos are extremely compatible with Japanese social media — JAL and the Tokyo Camera Club campaigns have been very effective using different hashtags.

Collaborations can increase engagement on Japanese social media as shown by Relux with hotels and the popular girl-group with the Jalan campaign.
